The new Covid-19 variant Omicron is spreading fast and the vaccine manufacturers are preparing for the possible need of a completely new vaccine against the variant.
Moderna as well as BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine manufacturers discuss if a completely new vaccine will be needed against the Omicron Covid-19 variant. There is not enough data to show if a new vaccine is needed, however, they are preparing for it. If the current Covid-19 vaccine and the booster shot are not effective against it, Omicron might require a completely new shot to keep people safe.
Moderna’s Chief Medical Officer Paul Burton said in CNBC‘s interview, that they could have a new vaccine available as soon as beginning of 2022. BioNTech estimated that it would take them about 100 days to get the new vaccine against the variant developed.
There is not enough data yet, to say if the current Covid-19 vaccine or the booster are effective against the new variant. Regardless the lack of data, President Biden urged everyone eligible on today’s news conference to get their booster shot and those not yet vaccinated, to get the shot as soon as possible. They estimated that in the next two weeks there will be more data about Omicron and how to respond to the variant.
CDC, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is recommending everyone over 5 years of age to get vaccinated. Everyone living in the United States is eligible to receive a vaccine regardless of their immigration status or health insurance.
Third booster shot is also available for everyone over 18 years of age. Person is eligible to receive the booster 6 months after the second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine. Or 2 months after the Johnson & Johnson single dose vaccine.
