Marimekko, which is one of Finland’s best-known fashion and interior design companies, will close in New York at the end of the year.

MTV News was the first to report on the matter today. The famous Finnish Marimekko opened its flagship store in New York in the heart of Manhattan ten years ago. The store’s lease expires at the end of the year and the employees will be laid off.

Numerous stores and restaurants have closed in New York due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The pandemic has had a big impact on tourist-favored Manhattan. During the pandemic, there has been a reduction in the amount of customers because of online shopping, but nothing can compare to personal shopping.

According to Sanna-Kaisa Niikko, Marimekko’s Marketing Director, a new type of store, Marimekko Kreative, will open somewhere next year in New York City.
