Helsinki Vantaa airport has been under major constructions and renewal project since 2014. Now, finally, long-waited terminal 2 will open for passengers on December 1st 2021. The terminal has gone through a major facelift; however, it is not done yet. As Finavia mentioned in their press release, there is still work to be done and the airport will evolve to serve the passengers in the best way possible. See the amazing images of the new modern look of our beloved airport at the end of the article.
What to expect of the new terminal?
Terminal 2 has changed its look completely for both, arrivals and departures. The multimodal travel center and the parking hall went through major upgrades as well. Terminal 1 or its services has not changed.
In Finavia’s press release, Ulla Lettijeff, Airport Director of Helsinki Airport said that the new terminal will help and smooth the travel experience of the passengers. The transportation and logistical changes made drop off convenient for the family members as well as for the taxis. The parking hall, bus stop, and taxi stand are all in short walking distance from the terminal. And everything is accessible through indoors (which is convenient especially during those snowy winter months). Bicyclists were also taken into consideration during the project and now there is a designated bicycle park.
Picking up arriving passengers will be even more easy now. A car can be left in the speed park right in front of Terminal 2. Passengers will arrive in the same terminal area where they can be conveniently be greeted by family and friends.
Familiar faces like R-Kioski and Alepa will continue serving passengers in the arrivals, 24/7.
New incomers are:
- Runway Bar
- Excess Baggage
On top of these services, Burger King, Helsinki Market and Moomin Shop will be also seen in the arrivals.
What changes still to expect
- The check-in and security in departures will be improved. By the summer 2023 a new, modern security system will be launched.
- During 2023, new central baggage claim will be implemented. Until that, luggage’s will be received normally in arrivals 2A and 2B.
- Spring 2022 will bring new services to the arrivals area and Plaza Premium Lounge will open.
The work will still continue at the airport and the project is estimated to be completely finalized by 2023. Other projects are happening around the area as well. The biggest hotels in Finland will be built right next to the airport by Skanska.
Opening of the Terminal 2 in beginning of December is a great step to the right direction. The renewed airport already looks amazing and it has already received recognition for its design and architecture. It is extremely modern and Finns can definitely be proud of how our new airport welcomes all travelers around the world.
